From December 1998 to April 1999, the over-seventy-year-old Agnès Varda, carrying a digital video camera, wandered through cities and villages in France and filmed images of gleaners in contemporary France: homeless people and those living in poverty rummage for various daily necessities to make a living, artists seek materials for their artworks from piles of scrap metal, and some people glean out of a moral opposition to waste. Besides gleaning, the film also has a subplot that seems detached from the main line but is actually closely related, such as an interview with a vineyard owner who also works as a psychologist, and discussions about film issues with descendants of Émile Malet, a pioneer of cinema. Moreover, this film is a self-portrait of the filmmaker. Varda often steps from behind the camera to the front, and even when she is behind the camera, she deliberately and moderately shows herself. Some shots are even taken by herself.
