Karoline, a young factory worker struggling to escape poverty in post-World War I Copenhagen, finds herself abandoned and pregnant. In her desperation, she meets Dagmar, a charismatic woman who runs a clandestine adoption agency hidden behind a candy store, offering help to destitute mothers seeking foster homes for their unwanted children. In an effort to break free from destitution, Karoline takes on the role of a wet nurse. A strong bond forms between the two women—but Karoline’s world shatters when she unintentionally uncovers the nightmarish fate she has unknowingly accepted.
