The story is set in 2045, where virtual reality technology has permeated every aspect of human life. James Halliday, the creator of a massive virtual reality universe called the OASIS, announces after his death that he has hidden an Easter egg somewhere in this digital world. The first person to find it will inherit his entire fortune and control of the OASIS. To locate the Easter egg, players must first obtain three keys, and the clues to finding these keys are hidden within Halliday's own past.
