This film is the first installment in director Makhmalbaf's proletarian trilogy. Nikod, a garbage truck driver at a sanitation company, is invited by his senior colleague—who plans to raise funds to establish their own sanitation company—to join as a technical partner. However, the senior colleague suddenly dies of a sudden illness shortly after, and Nikod’s life returns to a stagnant state. Unwilling to accept this, Nikod gets drunk and causes trouble. While in detention, he meets Mikala, who will later become his colleague. Though Mikala occasionally awkwardly interferes with Nikod’s secret pursuit of Ilona, a supermarket clerk, he remains Nikod’s most reliable friend. Ilona steals the cash box to get back at the supermarket manager; Nikod helps her find a new job at a clothing store. The clothing store manager comes between Nikod and Ilona, but Nikod ultimately reclaims his lover.
