Takeda Shingen has waged wars for years with cruel methods. At the age of seventy, he plans to divide his family's fortune into three parts, letting his three sons each hold power. He summons his eldest son Taro Takatora, second son Jiro Masatora, and third son Saburo Naotora to his presence, and uses the metaphor "a single arrow breaks easily, but three arrows together cannot be broken" to admonish the brothers, exhorting them to stand together through weal and woe. Saburo immediately places the three arrows across his knee and snaps them, protesting that his father, having gone through turbulent times, fails to understand human nature. Enraged, Shingen banishes Saburo from the domain. Saburo then goes to a neighboring country and becomes a son-in-law through marriage. Later, as Saburo predicted, the Takeda family falls prey to treachery, just as the warning against betrayal foretold. Strife breaks out between father and sons, and among the brothers themselves. What fate awaits them?
