In 1940, a film van pulled into a village on the Castilian plateau, and the children immediately gathered around it. The film being shown was Frankenstein. Among the audience were the young girl Ana and her older sister Isabel. Outside the screening area, their father was obsessed with his new beehives; he took out his pocket watch and ended his work for the day. Their mother was writing a letter. Even though the chance of the recipient receiving it was slim, she poured out her thoughts and longing on the paper before dropping it off at the railway station. Ana couldn’t get Frankenstein out of her mind. Isabel made up a story for her, saying that an isolated brick house on the moor was where the monster haunted. Ana fled in panic, but from then on, she kept returning to the brick house to check. Isabel seemed to have discerned some kind of secret—she feigned death, jumped over a fire, and did other such things. Before long, a wounded soldier hid in the brick house and was discovered by Ana. That night, the soldier was shot and killed. The father went to the village hall to collect the soldier’s belongings, including a pocket watch. Ana ran out of the village alone. At night, she encountered Frankenstein by the lake...
