《哀乐中年》讲述了上海小学校长陈绍常的中年悲欢。中年丧妻后，他独自抚养子女，却因地位低微被发迹的长子嫌弃，被迫退休。在苦闷迷茫之际，他与故友之女敏华重逢。敏华的鼓励让他决心重返事业，更在相处中与她产生深刻情感。面对与年龄差距巨大的感情和家庭的反对，陈绍常最终选择勇敢再婚，重启自己的人生。

The movie tells the story of Chen Shaochang, a primary school principal in Shanghai, and his joys and sorrows in middle age. After losing his wife in his middle years, he raised his children alone, only to be looked down upon by his eldest son—who had become successful—and forced into retirement. Amidst depression and confusion, he reunited with Minhua, the daughter of an old friend. Encouraged by Minhua, he resolved to return to his career; moreover, a deep affection developed between them as they spent time together. Faced with their significant age gap and opposition from his family, Chen Shaochang finally chose to bravely remarry and restart his life.
