In 1930s Shanghai, a poverty-stricken mother was reduced to working as a prostitute to support her son, only to be later dominated by a hoodlum. She secretly saved money solely to send her child to school, but when her identity was exposed, she faced widespread ostracism from the public, and the school eventually expelled her son. When she decided to take her son away from the city, she discovered that the hard-earned money she had saved had long been stolen by the hoodlum and lost in gambling...
